Frequently Asked Questions about Glass Temperature Measurement

What are the benefits of pyrometers designed for glass applications?

There are several benefits of glass temperature measuring instruments for the glass industry, including:

Accuracy: Impac® glass pyrometers provide precise and reliable temperature measurements to help manufacturers maintain consistent quality and minimise production defects.

Non-contact measurement: Glass pyrometers use non-contact infrared (IR) technology, enabling temperature measurement without the device needing to touch the glass. This solution eliminates the risk of damage to the glass surface or pyrometer optics.

High-temperature range: Glass pyrometers can withstand and measure extremely high temperatures like those commonly encountered in glass melting furnaces.

Fast response time: Pyrometers for glass applications have rapid response times, enabling real-time temperature monitoring. This precision control is essential for maintaining consistent and efficient glass production.

What are the uses and applications of pyrometers in the glass industry?

Pyrometers have multiple glass industry applications. These uses include:

  • Monitoring and controlling glass melting furnace temperature to ensure optimal operating conditions and consistent product quality.
  • Maintaining the desired temperature in the forehearth and feeder to ensure proper glass flow, stability and quality during the glass forming process.
  • Measuring the temperature of glass moulds to ensure accuracy and quality and enable precise monitoring of cooling rates.
  • Monitoring the temperature of glass products throughout the manufacturing process to detect defects such as improper cooling and enhance quality control.

Why is precise temperature measurement important for glass applications?

Precise temperature measurement is crucial for glass applications to ensure proper glass flow and achieve optimal quality.

Different glass applications require specific temperature ranges to achieve the desired viscosity for various forming processes, such as blowing, casting or pressing. Precise temperature measurement enables monitoring of glass flow and shape retention to ensure high-quality production.

Glass products also undergo thermal stress during cooling, which can cause cracking, warping or uneven cooling. Glass application pyrometers allow operators to monitor and control this process to prevent defects and ensure product quality.

Precise temperature measurement is critical for identifying opportunities to prevent defects and improve efficiency. Manufacturers can monitor and analyse the data provided by glass industry pyrometers to optimise processes, reduce waste and improve profitability.

How do you measure the temperature of glass?

Non-contact pyrometers for glass applications measure the radiation emitted by a glass surface, which correlates to the temperature of the material.

IR pyrometers do this without physically touching the surface. An operator points the optics towards the measured object, which focuses the emitted radiation invisible to the human eye onto a detector. The detector then converts the radiation into an electrical signal, from which the pyrometer can calculate the exact temperature.
