Unlocking Precision with IR Technology and Non-contact Temperature Measurement — Metals Industry

Accurate temperature measurements play a vital role in manufacturing. The accuracy of the measurement can affect not only the quality of the end product but also the productivity of the facility itself. 

Temperature measurement is a crucial aspect of a wide variety of manufacturing processes across a range of industries, including:

But reliable temperature measurement is especially important for the metals industry. While traditional contact-based measurements were the prevailing method for years, non-contact temperature measurement for metals and metal oxides has been a game-changer.

In particular, infrared (IR) technology and IR temperature measurement has revolutionised how object temperature can be monitored. In this blog, we will explore how non-contact temperature measurement works using IR technology and its industrial applications. 

An Overview of Non-contact Temperature Measurement

Non-contact temperature measurement, as the name suggests, involves determining the temperature of an object without physical contact. 

Instead of relying on direct contact with the object, the surface temperature can be measured remotely by looking at the IR radiation array emitted. 

This method of measurement offers several advantages: 

  • It is non-invasive.
  • It offers faster measurement times.
  • It can measure high-temperature objects safely.

IR Technology — The Key to Precise Temperature Measurements

IR technology plays a pivotal role in non-contact measurement. It uses the electromagnetic spectrum’s IR region to precisely measure objects. 

All objects above absolute zero (-273.15 °C) emit IR radiation, which is unseen by the human eye. When an object is heated, the amount of IR radiation increases in proportion to the temperature. By measuring the level of radiation, the object’s exact temperature can be determined.

Pyrometers: The Workhorses of Non-contact Temperature Measurement

Pyrometers are devices used to measure temperature using IR technology. They consist of optical components, detectors and electronic circuits. These components capture, process and interpret the IR radiation emitted by the object. They are highly accurate and can directly measure the temperature of all types of materials, including metals, over a wide temperature range. 

There are several different types of pyrometers, each designed for different applications and temperature ranges. The type of pyrometer used depends upon factors such as:

  • Temperature range
  • Object characteristics
  • Measurement requirements
  • Environmental conditions.

IR Temperature Measurement Applications in the Metals Industry

Non-contact temperature measurement using IR thermometers and technology is extensively used across a range of industries. For each industry, precise temperature control is critical, but this is particularly the case in the metals industry.  

Manufacturing

In manufacturing processes like forging, casting and heat treatment, maintaining optimal temperatures is vital for quality control. Non-contact temperature measurement allows operators to monitor the temperature of:

  • Molten metals
  • Billets
  • Components needing high accuracy.

This heat measurement can all be done without interrupting the process. This results in efficient heat management reduces energy consumption, and ensures the final product meets the required specifications. 

Steel Production

In steel production, precise temperature control is crucial for achieving the desired properties and quality of the final product. Temperatures have to be perfect during processes like:

  • Steelmaking
  • Refining
  • Casting
  • Rolling.

The use of pyrometers ensures the steel is heated or cooled to the optimal temperature resulting in improved quality, reduced defects and enhanced process efficiency.

Forging

Forging involves heating metal to high temperatures and shaping it under pressure. Pyrometers enable real-time monitoring of the temperature throughout the process. This ensures the ideal temperature is achieved, thus enhancing the metal’s workability and reducing the risk of cracks or deformities, thereby improving overall productivity. 

Heat Treatment Processes

Heat treatment processes such as annealing, tempering and hardening rely on precise temperature controls to achieve the desired properties. Once again, the pyrometer allows operators to ensure consistent and uniform heat treatment resulting in a stronger and more durable metal compound. 

Continuous Casting

Continuous casting is another process of metalwork that needs the exact temperature to ensure reduced internal defects. Molten metal is solidified into continuous billets or slabs within moulds. IR temperature measurement using pyrometers ensure the proper cooling rates and temperature gradients. This results in a strong, durable product with an improved surface finish. 

Welding

Welding involves joining metal components together by heating them to high temperatures. Ensuring the optimum temperature is vital to guarantee the quality and integrity of the weld and reduce the risk of defects and weaknesses. 

Forged in Technology — The Importance of IR Technology

The UK continues to be a major producer and exporter within the metals industry. Technological advancements and innovation have revolutionised productivity, efficiency, safety and quality. 

Producing high-demand, essential components is a critical process. These components are crucial to numerous secondary manufacturers, such as those in the automotive or construction sectors.
